Hot & Bothy is a community sauna retreat located behind Archerfield Walled Garden in East Lothian, around 40 minutes from Edinburgh. Our sauna village is set in open ground surrounded by nature, with far-reaching views across the Scottish countryside, with deer and wildlife passing by every session.
Each visit is a 90-minute shared session, giving you plenty of time to move slowly between heat, cold and rest without feeling rushed. Our sauna village is built from reclaimed materials, with a central fire pit at its heart. Between rounds, people gather here to warm up, drink herbal tea, and sit together – talking if they want to, or enjoying the quiet.
Bathers can rotate between two wood-fired saunas: the Bothy Sauna, a traditional Finnish-style sauna with strong heat and a large landscape window looking out across the grounds to Berwick Law, and Gurt’s Yurt Sauna, a handcrafted sauna yurt offering a softer, steadier heat and darker experience- the only publicly accessible sauna yurt of its kind in Scotland. Our 100 year old oak whisky barrel cold plunges and cold showers allow you to keep cool, or simply spend time outdoors in the elements.
Hot & Bothy is queer-led, body-neutral and community-focused. It’s a no-pressure space focused on how your body feels rather than how it looks. We have changing rooms and toilets, with accessible facilities, and regular sessions and events.
Our events often follow the seasons, celebrating moments like the full moons, Beltane and the Solstices through shared sauna, fire and ritual. We run events such as ‘Conscious Sauna’, Aufguss sessions, Silent sessions and a variety of sauna rituals. We also collaborate with local wellness practitioners to offer sound baths, meditation, yoga and more, hosted in our 20-metre bell tent. Sauna is always central to our events.
